The Sky is Falling
On the walk back home from school a piece of sky fell in front of me. A basketball-size chunk of grey matter fell right in front of my mustard yellow rain boots, on the sidewalk of the street. A sudden surprise, the incident, awoke me from my mechanical thinking and daydreaming about the school day.
The plop of land mass hitting the ground sounded like lightning to my ears and produced a ringing that had me discombobulated at first.
I initially did not notice the piece of sky in front of me, but I heard it, and it was not until my vision and mind became clear did I began to connect the dots to understand what had dropped in front of me.
If the incident did not just happen, I would have thought it was a weird rock in front of me. The experience of hearing something drop from the sky made me realize that what was happening was out of the ordinary.
My second thought after was to look around and above at the sky to see if anyone else heard and saw this just happening.
There must be a piece of the sky missing from up above.
My last consecutive thought was to pull out my phone and record what I saw in front of me.
After school I always walk this route. Some days I’m listening to music; some days I’m listening to an audiobook. Today, I was listening to the sound of the rain drops falling on leaves, a steel swing, the concrete floor, when I suddenly heard a loud bang and in front of me a piece of the sky dropped.
On any other day on my walk home there were children running around in the park while their mothers sat on the bench talking to each other. People, young and old, could be seen walking the trail near the park with their dogs. Other students could be seen on the same path walking the sidewalk to school and home.
Today as the sky dropped right in front of me and I turned to look around in the hazy rain there was no one to be seen in my line of vision. As I looked up at the sky, there was a hole in the sky ever so little.
If I didn’t take a video or picture no one would believe that a piece of the sky fell in front of me.
So that is what I did. I began to take pictures and videos. Snap, Snap.
The hazy rainy weather did not give justice to what I was witnessing.
The dark sky matter was beautifully eerie. It looked like a marble rock with different shimmers of reflection in the details. The rock seemed enchanting for being dark and grey. My mind wrestled with the idea of touching it.
I wonder how the sky feels. Would my hands fall off once I touched it? The thoughts spoke in my mind.
I could no longer resist the urge and touched the piece of sky and upon touch it felt squishy and weird. I thought of a thousand questions to myself. “Is this really the sky, I wondered, how heavy this is? And how did this happen? Out of all the days, no one was around.
